| I recommend using the best hearing protection possible while shooting. Shooting in matches or other times when
wearing a cowboy hat, molded or foam ear plugs work pretty well and fit under the hat with no problem. The molded
plugs are much easier to get into and out of your ear than the foam plugs and each give about the same protection.
Most of your shooting will be in practice so use the best protection you can find and that means a headset. Loud
noises can damage the bone behind your ear so a headset is necessary for the majority of your shooting. I practice and teach wearing a ball hat and Pro Ears hearing protection. The best protection for the money is the passive headset and the Pro Ears 28 works very well and are very inexpensive. They are thin enough to enable shouldering a rifle and shotgun but thick enough to give you good protection. I personally use the electronic Pro Slim (the electronic version of the Pro Ears 28) as I like and need to be able to hear conversation without having ro remove the headset. The Pro Slim is the best compromise for size and protection in an active headset. The Pro Ears are the hearing protection used by most top shooters in the shooting sports. |
